The Doric String Quartet was formed in 1998 at Pro Corda, The National School for Young Chamber Music Players in Suffolk. Since 2002 they have been studying on the Paris-based ProQuartet (European Centre for Chamber Music) Professional Training Program, where they have worked with Walter Levin of the LaSalle Quartet, and with members of the Alban Berg, Artemis and Hagen Quartets. They have recently embarked on an intensive period of study under Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartet. Earlier this year the Doric Quartet was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT).
In 2001 the Doric Quartet made their Purcell Room debut in a Park Lane Group concert. They have since gone on to give several concerts under the auspices of the PLG, including three performances of Haydn's Seven Last Words at the Purcell Room and four evening recitals at Wigmore Hall. In 2004 they were invited to perform Mozart's Clarinet Quintet with Michael Collins at Wigmore Hall's Christmas Concert. Abroad the Quartet has given recitals in Austria, France, Italy and Germany, appearing at Chateau de Fontainebleau near Paris, the Associazione Alessandro Scarlatti series in Naples, and at the ORF (Austrian Radio) Funkhaus in Vienna.
In 2000 the Doric Quartet won the inaugural Bristol Millennium Chamber Music Competition, which led to a five year residency at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford-on-Avon, where they are successfully developing a local audience for chamber music. They also work with young musicians throughout Wiltshire in a programme managed and funded in partnership with Wiltshire County Council.
This summer the Quartet make their debut at the Edinburgh International Festival. They go on to appear at the Purcell Room (25 September) and give the world premiere of a work by Gordon Kerry for quartet and voice with Catherine Wyn-Rogers at Wigmore Hall (29 October). The Quartet continue to give recitals at festivals and venues throughout the UK including concerts at Bridgewater Hall, Conway Hall, St. George's Bristol and the King's Lynn Festival. Abroad the Quartet give concerts in France and Italy.
The Doric String Quartet acknowledges the generous support of an Anonymous Foundation.
"This was a really fine concert, interestingly programmed and exceptionally involving in the way it was played. The Doric is a quartet to watch." The Daily Telegraph Wigmore Hall January 2004
